Transferring Old Fund Manager Versions To A New Computer

If you are using Fund Manager 12.0 or later, use the new version instructions instead.

Follow these steps to transfer your Fund Manager data to a new computer when using a 9.x, 10.x, or 11.x version of Fund Manager:

  1. From your old computer open your portfolio and make a backup using "File / Backup..."
  2. Download your version and run the installation program on your new computer
  3. Copy the backup file (*.FMB) from step #1 to your new computer, and use "File / Restore..." to select this file for restore.
  4. In the "Restore" dialog that comes up, choose the option to "Restore Everything in Backup".
  5. Choose to either restore to the "Original Location", or a "Specified Folder".  If the original location is still a valid path where you have write permissions on your new computer, choose this option.  If however the new computer does not have the same folder path, you would choose "Specified Folder", and "Browse..." to select a folder.  You may need to use the "Specified Folder" option when your old computer had a different username, or used a different path no longer available on your new computer.  To see the original path, select any investment from the "Files in Backup" list, and look at the "Original Location".  (Do not restore to a path anywhere beneath the "Program Files" folder, as versions of Windows after Vista do not provide you write permission in this folder.)
  6. Choose the "Open Restored Portfolio" option
  7. Press the "Restore" button to perform the restore

Tip on Conflicting Filenames:  If you need to choose the "Specified Folder" option during restore, all your investment files must have unique filenames, to avoid conflicts when copying all your investments into a single folder.  If you get an error during restore about conflicting filenames, go back to your old computer and re-save the conflicting investment file(s), so each investment has a unique filename.  To re-save an investment file, select it in the Portfolio Editor, and choose "File / Save Investment As...".  An easy way to view the location and filename of all your investments is to add "Location" and "Filename" to the Portfolio Editor list from the "View / List Columns..." command.  Repeat all the transfer steps after ensuring all your investments have unique filenames.

If you are using a version of Fund Manager that is earlier than 9.0, see the old version instructions.
