: Exported QIF file from Quicken Deluxe 2005 for one of my accounts, and imported with Fund Manager Personal v7.7. It seems none of the short cover transactions were recognized. I don't even see it in the transaction selection dialog window when I narrow the date range to when I know the transaction took place. Quicken codes it as

: ^
: D1/27' 6
: NCvrShrt
: YBOSTON SCIENTIFIC CORP
: I21.75
: Q100
: Cc
: U2,176.00
: T2,176.00
: O1.00

: in the QIF file. It seems when I replace CvrShrt with Buy, FM can see it during import.

: I have no problem with this as a workaround, but is there any difference between a buy and a cover short transaction in FM in terms of tax treatment and lot treatment?

: A related question, is there a way to generated a capital gains report for just a single security?

: Thanks,
: Bob

Hi Bob,

Your workaround should be fine, as long as you were short in the position when you bought (covered short). Fund Manager determines whether you are long or short in a position based on your share balance. If you own a negative number of shares in a Fund Manager investment you are considered to have a short position at that time. If you record a buy, this is covering that short position. If you own zero or a positive number of shares and record a buy, this in increasing or opening a long position. In both cases, it is just a buy transaction. This is probably a longer explanation than you wanted, but the short answer is it should be fine to replace "CvrShrt" with "Buy".

I'll also see about getting support added for "CvrShrt" in a future version.

On your capital gains question... You could create a temporary new sub-portfolio, and put just the one investment in there, and then create your capital gains report for that sub-portfolio containing just the one investment. An investment can be instantiated in multiple sub-portfolios.

Thanks,
Mark
