: Mark,

: I thought setting up a portfolio was getting to be a relatively painless exercise but am getting flashbacks from a couple of weeks ago. Here's what happening --please excuse the excruciating detail as I'm trying to draw light on any detail that may be causing the whole mess.

: 1) I manually set up an account and enter a default cash account called "cash account" on the basis of an initial deposit.
: 2) Enter by hand transactions over the same month.
: 3) Retrieve OFX entries for the following month (the first month that is available), checking the box that asks whether transactions should be coordinated with cash account.
: 4) Upon OFX retrieval, the data received concerning cash account are labelled as such. However, there's a series of money-market transactions that, upon retrieval, show up as deficit entries (labelled in red), and upon retrieval, the account's overall balance for the month appears to be falsely attributed to cash account, not accounting for the deductions made to purchase stocks. OFX names the money market transactions "ZZZ00". But ZZZ00, the money market transactions, appear to be mislabeled by either OFX or FM (can't tell which) under General Investment Properties/General and 'Large Cap Stock" transactions under Investment Properties/Asset Type.
: 5) THe portfoliio balance is more than 30% off as a consequence.

: If possible, please advise how to remedy what should be a very simple list of transactions --nothing fancy...just cash account, money market account and stocks, with a couple of dividends.

Hi Steve,

Do you really have both a cash account and a money market account? If you look at the balance online, do you have two separate accounts for holding cash? Maybe you just need the money market, and not the cash account. You can assign the money market as your default cash account.

Did you actually assign the cash account you manually created as the default cash account for the sub-portfolio? This is in the Portfolio Properties... dialog.

What are the deficit entries that show up for the money market? Are you expecting those? Are they money withdrawn from the account? Are they money withdrawn to make other purchases?

Keep in mind that every transaction that uses/creates money and is not in the default cash account will make a corresponding entry in the default cash account. So, if someone withdraws money from your money market, and you have a different cash account, these funds will get deposited into the cash account by FM when you have the option on to automatically record corresponding entries in the default cash account. This is why I was suggesting to have just a single cash account, like maybe your money market account.

Maybe an example of a couple transactions will help... If you have a purchase of a stock, you should see only the 1 purchase show up in your listing of transactions when you preview the OFX retrieve. If you also see the withdraw from a money market or cash account show up in the listing, then you would not want to check the option to automatically record corresponding entry in default cash account, as it was already created by the OFX download. Most OFX data feeds do not automatically show a transaction for the corresponding cash debit/credit, but you should double check to make sure.

Likewise, if you have a distributed dividend you should only see this one dividend transaction. FM will automatically take care of putting the funds into your default cash account when that option is on.

You might want to also review the discussion of sweep accounts here:

Basically, you'll just want to review the transactions in the Preview screen and make sure you understand all the entries listed there.

After the retrieve is complete, if there is a problem with the balance of any investment use the Data Register to see what transactions are recorded wrong.

Thanks,
Mark
