: : Mark,

: : Thanks for the clarification. Based on what you said, I think I'm just going to make backup copies of the data folder myself, but I'm still a bit confused as to why the backup command doesn't do that. Why leave out the portfolio file?

: There's no good reason. This feature just hasn't kept up with the rest of the features in FM.

: : Just to be clear, am I correct in understanding that the data folder contains *all* the data I need in order to restore things?

: It depends on where you have stored your data. By default, all investments and portfolios are stored in the "My_Data" folder, but you could have chosen a different location. If all of your data is in the "My_Data" folder, then yes, it contains everything you need.

: : I have a couple related questions regarding the other files in the data folder. I noticed that the investment files saved with the backup command don't include files that have been closed, so I'm wondering:

: : Is it ok to remove closed investment data files from the data folder?

: Yes. If you aren't using the investments anymore, you can safely delete them.

: : Is there a way to have all closed investment data files automatically found and removed from FM?

: If they're closed, then they're already removed from FM. I think you're asking if you can remove them from the data folder? There is no automated way of doing this. One tip is to create a custom report with the "Path and filename" field. This way you can quickly see all of the investment's location and filenames.

: : If I want to rename investment data files without confusing the program, is the best way to close the investment, rename the file, and then reopen the investment with the new name?

: Yes, this would work. An easier way is to select an investment in the Portfolio Editor, and use "File / Save Investment As...". You can then delete the old investment file outside of FM.

: : Thanks,

: : -John

: Thanks,
: Mark
