: Hi Mark:

: Sorry to bring up this old chestnut of a topic again, but Yahoo seems to be conspiring against us Canadians - there seem to be no historical US$-C$ exchange rates left on that site.

: I know that I can download the data manually, and input it into the dummy exchange rate security, but that really is a lot of work compared to just clicking a mouse button for an update. Quite frankly, not having this exchange rate on call rather limits the functionality of Fund Manager for me.

: Is there any site that you can get a link to that will provide this exchange rate automatically, now that Yahoo has abandoned us?

: Also, the E*Trade automated link for opening a new portfolio doesn't work with E*Trade Canada. Is it possible for you to add that outfit to your list?

: Regards,

: Jack

Hi Jack,

Yes, it is unfortunate Yahoo doesn't offer historical quotes on exchange rates. They haven't for quite some time. It sounds like you've already seen that you can download/import them, but I'll point out this FAQ item just in case:

Maybe we can offer support for retrieving from OANDA in a future version. If you know of another good source for this data please let us know.

Usually I believe people get historical quotes once, and then just update prices daily or weekly going forward. This way you don't need to download historical quotes anymore. If you don't access Fund Manager this often, and want to get updates, you might consider setting up a scheduled task and using FM's command line interface to update quotes for your portfolio. Unfortunately, I don't believe any Canadian brokers offers OFX servers, so we don't have a way of adding them to the transaction retrieve feature. I'm not sure of the reason why, it may be some Canadian law preventing them from making these available. I suspect this because the US versions of these same brokers do offer OFX servers. For example, E*Trade US does, while E*Trade Canada doesn't. You might contact your broker and ask them about why they don't make an OFX server available for you to access with your portfolio management software. For a little more info on this topic, please read:

Thanks,
Mark
