: Are you looking at a "Portfolio Performance" report? There is a common question about reporting of the beginning value in this report. The "Beginning" value in this report is the value as of the morning of the starting report date. This means, any deposits made on the starting report date, are not included in the beginning value. The beginning value is the same as the value as of the close the prior day.

thanks Mark. my question is, why does the beginning value change when i pay out cash. for example, the first date i created the portfolio is jan 01 2006 with initial capital of $1,000,000. after this date, i made some stock and bond investments and the portfolio changed in value to let's say $1,100,000 today (march 7 2007). Today, i took some cash out from the portfolio in the amount of $50,000. When i run the "Port Performance Report" from the earliest date to the present i get these values. BEGINNING VALUE 950,000 - ENDING VALUE 1,050,000. Why does this subtact from my beginning value? Shouldn't the value on the earliest date (i.e. Jan 01, 2006) still remain at 1,000,000.
