Rights issues - how to deal with?

As a shareholder, I am occasionally issued with rights, warrents or options to buy new shares at a nominated discounted price, and these often have a positive value if sold rather than exercised.
How should the value realised by selling rights be categorised & clearly identified? It is not a redemption of shares, nor is it a distribution in the normal sanse
