Putting Indexes in Portfolio for tracking Purposes

I think I understand adding a stock index (ex DJIA) so that you can overlay on portfolio however when I try to do an update of the index I get server errors. I suspect the symbol I'm using isn't correct but don't know how to fix it. Sample Problem: Yahoo says the Dow Jones Industrial Close is "^DJI1" but I can't retrieve this - what am I doing wrong? Thanks
