: What is the best way to update and maintain unique buy and sell (etc.) information on a stock that is in several portfolios when you use a single updating file to update everything? I don't want the buy and sell points from one portfolio showing up in the other portfolio. Right now, I use "Lee's IBM" for the name of one IBM holding and "Marty's IBM" (both with the same IBM symbol) for updating. Should or can I put them both in the single updating file?

To track separate transactions just create
2 investment files for IBM. For example, IBM1.dat
and IBM2.dat. They can each have whatever investment name
you'd like. They both should have IBM recorded
for the symbol. Investments can be in any
combination of portfolios you want. Put IBM1.dat
in 1 portfolio, put IBM2.dat in another, and then
put them both in the portfolio you use for
retrieving prices, so you only have to do one
retrieve to update all your prices.
