: : I have purchased shares in the Vanguard European Stock
: : Index Fund. This "no load" fund charges a 0.5%
: : purchase fee. I recorded each purchase as two
: : transactions; 1) the purchase with actual price and
: : shares purchased, and 2) the account fee as a negative
: : distribution.

: : When I select the Portfolio Performance Report using a
: : date range of initial purchase date to current date,
: : the initial account fee is not included in the Distrib.
: : Amount column. To get it included, I must specify a
: : date range beginning with the day before my initial
: : purchase.

: : Showing my ignorance, I have several questions related
: : to this....
: : 1) Is this reporting (i.e. not including all activity
: : occurring on the same date) "as designed", and if
: : so, what is the rationale?

: Yes, this is "as designed". This is also how
: it is documented in the online help if you choose
: "Help/Help on Report...". The feedback on this
: has been that it should work as you expected, and
: it has been changed to work that way for FM 4.

:
: : 2) I suppose I could have defined this as a "loaded"
: : fund (I incorrectly thought the fee would be waived
: : once my account reached a certain volume). Is that
: : your recommendation? However, are there not some
: : funds that do begin waiving such fees, and how would
: : those be handled?

: I would suggest changing the investment type to
: a loaded fund. You can change it at any time,
: even after creation. The only difference between
: the different investment types is the way you
: enter transactions. For "no-loads" it assumes
: you pay no fees.

Thanks for the response Mark. I revisited the help and do not see the documentation
you referred to. It does say reinvested distributions are not included, but account fees
are not reinvested. However, since it will be fixed in FM4, it's unimportant.

Thanks again and allow me to compliment you for a great product and service.
Regards,
Gordon
