How can I track private investments?

To track any investment that does not have a traditional share price, track it at a price of $1/share and record market gains/losses as reinvested distributions.  Keep all transaction and closing prices at $1.

For example, if you invested $10,000 in a private equity or real estate investment, record a purchase of 10,000 shares for $1/share and a value of $10,000.  If the market value increases to $10,500, record a reinvested distribution for 500 shares at a price of $1/share.  You will now own 10,500 shares.
