File locations

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hi Mark,

I just realise that for some reasons, my portfolio files and my data files are located in different directories. Not sure how that happen. I started using fm recently and am still familiarising with it.

I would like to keep them together or at least under the same directory with different sub-directory.

Question:

1. How do I locate the files - I can see the portfolio files and most of the dat files but I notice some is missing but it is appearing when viewed from the fund manager software. Is there an option that I can view to find the location of the investment files? This would help locate them.

2. I found one of the investment files in a different directory and I have moved it to where most of the investment files were located and it appears to work ok - the apps showed an "error" indicating missing file" but I pointed it to the new location and it appears to work fine. Exception was in one of the report (TWR) which doesn't seem to pick up the 1 mth value - it is giving N/A (the investment was purchase during the month) when it should show a interpolated value.

3. As I only just started using fmsoftware, I would like to reorganise the directory structure in my PC for the fm apps data. Will there be a problem if I move both the portfolio and investment files and then just redirect the location of the files when I first fire up the application? I did a test run and it appears to work with the exception of the problem indicated in point 2 above.

Many thanks

Matt

Hi Matt,

1) Add the "Location" (and maybe "Filename") to the Portfolio Editor window, using "View / List Columns...". You can also use "Path and filename" in a Custom report.

From within the Portfolio Editor, you can select an investment, and use "File / Save Investment As...". This is probably safer than moving the file, and re-directing FM the next time it can't find it.

2) The file is either open, or it isn't. If you're seeing it in FM, then it is open, and that shouldn't affect any N/A numbers. If it is TWR for an investment, check your recorded closing prices in the Data Register, and also look at your interpolation range settings.

3) If you move the whole data folder together this is fine. Portfolio files (*.mm4) remember the location of the included investment files in a relative manner to the .mm4 file location itself.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark.

I think I know how the investment files when to different directories.

When I did an export for the investment transactions to a different directory, it appears to remember that and any new investment created would go to that directory.
