Error while back up and closing the software

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby Harsh » Sun Apr 03, 2011 11:24 pm

I am using v10.9. I have installed the software on a new computer. Ever since Restoring the portfolio on this computer I have been getting error stating the access is denied and I am unable to create a new investment and even back up data from this computer.

I have uninstalled and software are reinstalled it twice. Not sure what the problem is.

Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Harsh

Hi Harsh,

When do you get the error, and what does it say exactly? I'm guessing that your data files (*.mm4 and *.dat) are either marked as read-only, or you do not have permissions set so that your user has full control. Go look at the properties of your data flies, and check these attributes.

Also, where are you storing your data files? Make sure you are storing to a location you have write permission. If you're using Vista/Win 7 you can no longer write anywhere within the Program Files folder. A good place to store your data is in "My Documents \ Fund Manager". For more on this, see:

Thanks Mark.

I am running Windows 7. I am running the program by right clicking and "running as administrator". For some reason the data restored has not be in My Documents/Fund Manager but it has gone in another folder in C:\. I have uninstalled, reinstalled the software and restored the backup thrice now but it is always restoring in c:\. Not sure why this is the case.

Also when I try to restore data by specifying the location, I get an error stating duplicate data and restore failed.

Anyways its working fine by running as administrator. Maybe something in the settings of this new Computer.

Hi Harsh,

It is not a good practice to have to run FM as administrator. You have to do this when your data is stored in a non-standard place, like Program Files or in the root of the C drive. You should get all your data into the "My Documents \ Fund Manager" folder, and then run FM regularly (not as administrator).

It sounds like you had data stored in multiple folders on your old computer. What can happen is if you have the same named file stored in 2 different folders, and then you restore that to a single new folder, you will get a filename conflict. To fix this, go to your old computer, and get all your data stored into a single folder, or at least give all your investments unique filenames. Alternatively, if you intended to set up your investments in different folders, copy the whole folder structure to your new computer. If you do this, you can't use FM's backup/restore feature.

Method 1: On the old computer, add "Location" to the Portfolio Editor list view, so you can see where all your investments are being stored. For any investments that are not stored in the 1 folder you want, select the investment, and choose "File / Save Investment As..." and switch it to be saved in the 1 folder. Repeat until all investments are saved in the same folder. Now you can do the backup on this computer, and restore it to a specified folder on your new computer.

Method 2: If you have all your data in multiple folders and want to keep it that way, use Windows Explorer to copy all the folders/data that contain your *.mm4 and *.dat files to your new computer, maintaining the same folder hierarchy.

It is usually easiest if you just save all your data in a single folder (Method 1).
Thanks,
Mark
