FM 2026 Beta feedback

Hi Mark,

I've tested Fund Manager 2026 Beta and here are some feedback on little issues or suggestions for improvements.
Needless to say, I love all the improvements and new options in this release!

Here I will make feedback on the little things. Some more consequent things (to discuss if needed) will follow in some other posts.

1) Legends in Pie graphs

1a - Lacks a bit of room with some figures (too close to the colored square):

1b - The tooltip for the legend items continues to appear very far on the right of them, where the zone is completely empty. I understand that's an expandable area for the labels, but could be IMO neater if the appearance of the tooltips could be more precisely positioned.

2) Crosshair cursor in graphs

With the crosshair, when Shift+drag to select an area to zoom in, the selection rectangle is not correctly rendered (eg the right border of the rectangle)

3) Retrieve prices by symbol

Added the ability to retrieve prices by symbol in the Symbol List dialog. You can retrieve with either the primary or historical quote servers. The ability to update prices manually by symbol also remains available.

I've not found the feature. Is this something for the Advisor version only?

4) Problem when a recent portfolio file fails to open
With the feature "If a recent portfolio file fails to open, you are now given the option to remove that portfolio file from the most recent list.":
1) Open a valid portfolio file, then a report
1) Click on an invalid entry in the File menu > The dialog "The portfolio file... does not exist or cannot be found" appears > OK
2) "Could not open portfolio" dialog > OK
The Portfolio that was open is now closed, but the report remains open. It is a problem for the next steps.

5) Portfolio Tree state saved
Excellent improvement!
But maybe the following could be considered as an issue:
1) The option is On.
2) I arrange the Portfolio Tree like I want. The last action I make is to collapse a sub-portfolio (I don't want to see its content).
3) With this portfolio collapsed selected, I save the portfolio
4) I restart FM: the portfolio is expand. This is not what I wanted. But it's because the portfolio selected at the time of saving is automatically expanded at startup.

6) Quicker access for "Moving Average Weeks" graph options

In both the Portfolio/Investment(s) Overlay and the Investment Overlay graph types, moved the "Overlaid Investments..." and "Overlaid Portfolios..." right mouse menu commands to the top of the menus for quicker access

I think the command "Moving Average Weeks" should be put too on the top of the right mouse menu for the graph types "Moving Average" and "MA Overlay", to be uniform with the rest. (and for a better accessibility of this dialog that is not obvious to find in the menus)

7) Issue with the right mouse menu in the "Monthly Performance" report
In the changelog:

Fixed some issues with the right mouse menu in the "Monthly Performance" report

But an issue remains:
Right click on some figures in the body of the report. Then left click in an empty area of the report just to close the contextual menu > a Performance report is opened (why?)

8) Graph a "Display Hidden Investments with Activity"
Really minor thing, to help me tick the boxes, is there a reason why this suggestion has not been implemented? viewtopic.php?p=26918#p26918

9) Share number: don't display unnecessary digits in tooltips and status bar
This is a suggestion regarding share number digits.
There are two types of investments: those for which fractional shares can be purchased, and those where you can only buy whole shares.
Typically, in the General Preferences, you choose to display several share digits as soon as you have to deal with investments with fractional shares. This leads to display several useless "0" digits for non fractional share investments, but in the Portfolio Editor and in the reports that's the way it has to be for everything to line up.
But at some other locations, like toolips and status bar (maybe some others), when all digits are "0" why not removing them to display only the integer? This would improve / simplify the display / reading.

Eg. remove the ",0000" to display only "25 shares" here:

10) Horizontal scrolling in the right part of the Portfolio Editor
In the right part of the PE, if the vertical scroll bar is not displayed (i.e. all the lines fit on the screen), operating the mouse wheel causes a horizontal scrolling of the display / columns. I don't remember that with the previous version, and seems like a an unwanted behavior because: 1) the horizontal scrollbar doesn't move in sync. 2) As soon as the lines don't fit on the screen the action of the mouse wheel is a vertical scrolling, so that is not a coherent behavior.
But nevertheless I found very interesting the possibility to scroll horizontally with the mouse wheel. AFAIK this feature was not available (?). Maybe Ctrl+ mouse wheel to scroll horizontally?

1a) Thanks, we'll get this fixed.

1b) The tooltip should be showing right above wherever your cursor is located. It is true that if your cursor is on one of the legend lines, even all the way to the right of the window, it will still be considered on that item, and display the tooltip, but it should be right above the cursor always.

2) Interesting. I looked, and this was an issue in FM 2024 as well...

3) Correct, "Edit / Symbol List..." is an Advisor only feature.

4) Thanks, we'll get this fixed.

5) Good point. When the option "Store/Recall Expanded State of Sub-Portfolios in Tree View" is on, we won't automatically open the "selected" sub-portfolio. It will be restored as it was when you last saved.

6) Okay, thanks for the feedback.

7) All reports currently work this way. When you do this (right mouse click on a report, and then left mouse click outside the menu), it is the same as if you had left clicked on that original location. Whatever left click action is set for that report will happen. If you're trying to dismiss the menu, you might prefer to use Esc on the keyboard or left click on the window title. If you left click on a row in the Monthly Performance report, FM will "zoom" in on that row and show you a Portfolio Performance report for that date range, so you can see more detail on the performance for that date range.

8) Sorry we weren't able to implement that. No, there is no specific reason. Unfortunately there are many things we want to implement, but simply aren't able to. We try to prioritize based on benefit/resource requirements, but it isn't an exact system.

9) Good point. We'll at least improve this now for graph tooltips, where space is at a premium, and lining up isn't an issue.

10) Interesting. I see this too, and confirmed it was also in FM 2024 (and probably all prior versions). FM is relying on the default handling of the scroll wheel in this case. Something to look at for the future...

Another feedback:

When right mouse clicking on a transaction there are 2 possible new menu commands: "Show Associated Cash Transaction" or "Show Source Transaction" depending on which side of the transaction you've selected.

I have a default cash account in €. I've noticed those commands are not available / displayed for the transactions made in investments in another currency than €.

I can't reproduce this. If the transaction was recorded using 1 exchange rate, and the recorded exchange rate has changed since recording, this could happen. What if you record a new transaction in this non-€ investment, and then look to see if you see these new menu commands?

I've quicky set up a testing FM in a virtual machine and the commands are still not available.

Ah! When "Exchange Rate Adjusted" is off the commands appear... When it's on they disappear.
Is this by design?

Thanks again. No, that wasn't by design. It is a bug. I now see it too. When "View / Exchange Rate Adjusted" is on, it doesn't work properly. We'll get this fixed too.

My feedback list is empty now, but I just found another thing:

In the right part of the Portfolio Editor, when a column is resized the list is refilled. Seems not normal...

Minor: when you activate one of the commands: "Show Associated Cash Transaction" or "Show Source Transaction", the target transaction has not really the focus in the Data Register (not selected in blue), and it's confirm because if you use the up/down arrow key at this moment it is the sub-portfolio that is changed.
This issue doesn't exist when Ctrl+one the commands (to open another DR), the focus is OK then.

Yes, it has to do with keeping the "Totals" columns in sync with the top part of the list. When displaying totals there are 2 list views, one for the main data, and one for the totals. When you resize the top one, FM resizes both. It has worked this way for a while. I'm sure this could be improved, but this is how it works now. If you turn off totals (Options / General Preferences... / Portfolio Editor Display / Show Totals in List View) it won't do this.

I noticed this too when fixing the other bug you mentioned and this will be fixed for the next release too.

The issue #2 - Shift+drag with crosshair, is not fixed. It is possible to fix it? This is the cursor I use now since the snapping can be disabled.
