Adding Alert Type to Notification/ New Alert Percent Changed

Comments, critical feedback, praise, or suggestions for new features.

Postby B2B_Investing » Sat Jul 25, 2015 6:11 am

Mark,
You may recall I made the request for adding a short memo field to the alerts to help remind what the alert was for or action to take. (Especially when the triggered alert was set some time ago. Some of my alerts are informational and some prompt action.) This information would also be included in the emailed alert. As I evaluate the Professional Version a few more requests come to mind.

Two really desired features

1. Include Alert Type in Alert (especially Emailed)
Including Alert Type (e.g. stop loss, Moving Average, fixed) as well as direction (i.e. fixed above, fixed below) in the email alert would be helpful in offering context especially when combined with a short memo. When several arrive (sometimes with more than one security each) it would be helpful since I am usually interrupted and scanning a buzzing BlackBerry evaluating if I need to do something. Seems straight forward (?) to add a few fields to the query.

2. Custom Calculated Alerts (Percent Changed)
Being able to set an alert by specifying the parameters of % change (positive or negative) and the time period (in days or weeks) is very much wanted. This is different from a Moving Average alert as the trigger is calculated from a single historic price. The alert would float and recalculate the trigger price as time progresses. This would be a very powerful alert.

Thanks for considering.

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the feedback. #1 is pretty straight-forward, and would be fairly easy to add. We'll try and do this. For #2, there is already a "Trailing Stop Loss" alert, that is specified in terms of a percentage, and you specify a date to start the trailing stop loss alert. How would your request differ from the existing trailing stop loss alert?
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

Thanks. As I understand trailing stop-loss, the trigger price is x% below the high price. As the security price increases, the high-price changes, the trigger increases and the alert is tripped when a X% percent decline occurs. Perfect for its intention in tracking a loss from a high.

I am interested in an alert that is triggered by a percentage +/- % change over a user-defined time period and not a loss from the high price. For example a security has increased (decreased) X% over N time--say six months, one year, etc. This would be useful for alerting over(under) performance in a held or watched security over time. It avoids having to manually manage a lot of fixed price alert tripwires to accomplish the same thing. It is different than a moving average alert in that it is a dynamic, proactive, performance-over-time alert.

It seems simple enough to calculate: compare specified +/-% change from current price to a rolling single point in time. If tripped send an alert that the % change was exceeded. My thinking is it could be a single alert type.

Does that help explain the thinking and value?

Jason

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the clear explanation, I understand. I can see why you would want to use something like that. We can consider this for a future update.
Thanks,
Mark

Thats all I can ask for Mark.

I have been in technology for quite a while and greatly appreciate FM. It is an elegantly simple platform that is powerful. The manner in which data can be organized, graphed and reported permits insights that empower an investor to make informed decisions grounded in facts. There is no other tool quite like it for individual investors. Thank you for such an excellent product.
