Default cash account

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby swisspm » Thu May 22, 2025 2:16 am

Hello Mark,

If I capture several share purchases on Fund Manager, using different currencies and payments from different banks, I currently change the default cash account each time under the portfolio's property settings.

Is there a way that I can just select the correct bank account each time I do the Buy or the Sell?

Hi swisspm,

If you are entering these transactions manually, you can use this option in the Buy/Sell dialog:

Use Cash Account
When recording a buy or sell transaction the corresponding cash will be entered into your default cash account. In the case where the investment is not in the default currency and you have multiple cash type investments of differing currencies in the same sub-portfolio as the investment, you will be given the choice of which cash investment to use. Otherwise, your specified default cash account will be used.

This will be a drop-down list of available Cash investments you can use for this transaction.
You'll only see this option if you have multiple "cash" type investments and they aren't all in the same currency.

Also, you can organize your investments into sub-portfolios by currency, and assign a different cash account for each currency. In this case the correct default cash account is used without you having to pick it. If you're retrieving transactions this may be better. See the option "Put Investments of Non-Default Currency in Separate Sub-Portfolios" in the New Investments Options Dialog.
Thanks,
Mark

Thank you Mark.

I use one sub-portfolio for bank accounts and a different one for stock and fund investments. If I understand you correctly, it seems that it is not possible for me to see the various banks accounts in the first sub portfolio when I books a trade in the second sub portfolio. Is that correct?

Hi swisspm,

If your investments are in a separate sub-portfolio than your cash investments, you won't be able to pick the cash to use in the Buy/Sell dialog with the "Use Cash Account" drop-down, but you could still organize your investments into sub-portfolios by currency, and assign the default cash account from anywhere in the hierarchy. When choosing a default cash account for a sub-portfolio, you can turn on the "Show All" option next to the "Default Cash Account" drop-down in the "Portfolio Properties" dialog which will allow you to pick a cash investment from anywhere in your hierarchy. The setup would look something like this:

Code: Select all
- Master
  - Bank Accounts
    <EUR Cash Investment>
    <USD Cash Investment>
  - Investment Accounts
    - Acct 1
      - EUR
        <EUR Stock 1 Investment>
        <EUR Stock 2 Investment>
      - USD
        <USD Stock 1 Investment>
        <USD Stock 2 Investment>

So, at the "Master / Investment Accounts / Acct 1 / EUR" sub-portfolio, you would assign the default cash to: "Master / Bank Accounts / EUR Cash Investment". Do the same for each currency.
Thanks,
Mark
