Extended Currency Tutorial

Comments, critical feedback, praise, or suggestions for new features.

Hello Mark,

Thanks for the great work you are doing with the product.
I am currently evaluating FM software.
As I am based outside US, most of my use cases are when using a default currency other than USD.
I have went through multiple Topics in the forum and now have a clearer understanding of the currency issue.
Having said that, I think it would be a great help to create an extended Tutorial covering currency issues.
The current tutorial does not address the requirement to have multiple sub portfolios with default cash accounts etc.
Those are quite complex issues and such a tutorial can save a lot of time for the newbie.

Many thanks in advance,
Barak

Hi Barak,

Thanks for the feedback. Setting up the currency feature for your needs can be tricky, so I'm sure this would be a good improvement.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

I'm in Canada.

I'm getting under the hood of FundManager just to make sure all is set up well. My Default Currency is CAD and trade in USD. I finished reviewing the help files. So, just to make sure, is the following set up correctly?

1. Currency Settings, I'm using as per the image where Default = C and when View/Exchange Rate Adjusted is turned ON then then Currency 2: USD -> CAD kicks in. I get that.

2. I set up the USD -> CAD investment as displayed in the image...My question is on the symbol selected for the Currency...it should be the one for USD "$" yes? Not the one for CAD...yes?

3. I wanted to see if the updates were fine. Retrieval is via Bloomberg. Where would I see this?

4. How does Fund Manager know to use this file? Can I move the Investment around in the Portfolio Editor?

Thanks,
ThomasK

Hi ThomasK,

1) Looks good.

2) The currency you assign to an exchange rate investment really doesn't matter. It can be anything.

3) Look at the investment in the Data Register under the Data Type of "Prices".

4) Yes, you can move it around. It will keep it assigned no matter where you keep it in the sub-portfolio tree, as long as you don't close it.
Thanks,
Mark
