Wall Street Journal as quote server

Comments, critical feedback, praise, or suggestions for new features.

Hi Mark,

Could you consider The Wall Street Journal as a new source to download prices ? The database is really good with (historical) prices not fund elsewhere.

http://markets.wsj.com/us

Thanks.

Hi Djobydjoba,

I took a quick look, and they do seem to offer a lot. Unfortunately, it seems there is a different URL for stocks, indices, etc, so it would be difficult to make one server that supported all these. I also saw historical prices for indices, but not stocks... Was there a particular set of instruments this server offers that aren't available on any of our other supported servers?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Yes, there's a lot of data. I'm overall satisfied with the existing quote servers, but the more the better I guess. This could be an alternative source. This is more to bring this site to light rather than a real need at the moment.

Hi Djobydjoba,

Okay, thanks for pointing it out. I hadn't ever taken a look at that server before.
Thanks,
Mark

For information, to download historical prices for stocks, use the "All Sections" button.
Example with Apple : http://quotes.wsj.com/AAPL/historical-prices

Ahh, now I see it. I see they even have a nice "Download a spreadsheet" link. That makes it convenient.

As an aside, you could also import that spreadsheet with the Generic price import today, using the format string:

MM/DD/YY,OO,HH,LL,NAV,VV

This source (WSJ) for quotes is really very interesting.

To search quotes there is this strange page which doesn't work for me : http://online.wsj.com/quotes/lookup.html?
In fact, it seems that there is a part of the WSJ website which is old and quite broken, the part related to ETF and mutual funds. So WSJ can't probably be a source to download prices for ETF and fund, at least at the moment.

But in the new part of the website, the data available is great. From the Market Data page for example : http://markets.wsj.com/usoverview

On any asset page (stock, index or currency), click the All sections button and then Historical Prices to access the prices. The date range can be chosen and the spreadsheet downloaded. There is no historical data for futures, but for stocks, indexes and currency the historical data available are really impressive.

Moreover, it seems that the data can be downloaded without any date range limit. I've tried: 20 years of end-of-the-day quotes can be downloaded in one pass in a spreadsheet, and probably more ! This is far better than Yahoo, Google and Bloomberg.

This page can be the page to start when searching for stocks : http://quotes.wsj.com/company-list. Or, there is the search field, which works quite OK with company names but with indexes it's pretty lame. It's a pity because the database for indexes is awesome. Personally I am very interested in indexes, I use them extensively to monitor the markets and with the use of relative strengths. And no other source can beat WSJ regarding indexes. On Bloomberg, only the major country indexes are available now, all the sectors and regions indexes are not available anymore (to promote the Bloomberg Terminal). On Yahoo and Google we can found a little more indexes but the historical data is not always available, it's very uncertain.

In the WSJ there is plenty of indexes, but to access them, because of the lame search engine, it's better to know the index ticker (or vendor codes). We can find them on the websites of the index companies.

Here's a spreadsheet from the Dow Jones Indexes company, with all the DJ indexes :
https://www.djindexes.com/mdsidx/downlo ... _codes.xls
Use the ticker name in the column "Suggested Ticker", it's the ticker to enter in the WSJ Search Field.

Here's the spreadsheet from the FTSE Indexes company :
http://www.ftse.com/products/tickers%5C ... ?type=ftse
Use the ticker name in the column "FTSE Code" column, it's the ticker to enter in the WSJ Search Field.

Here's the spreadsheet with the S&P GSCI Standard Indexes (indexes for commodities)
http://us.spindices.com/documents/addit ... -table.pdf
Try with the ticker name in the column "S&P DJI Index Code", it's the ticker to enter in the WSJ Search Field.

Etc.

All the indexes in theses files aren't available in WSJ, but a lot are. WSJ is hands down the best database available for indexes, it's impressive.

An integration of WSJ as a quote server in Fund Manager, if possible, would be great.

Hi Djobydjoba,

Thanks for the additional information. I can see this being a good server to add support for, so we can consider it.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Djobydjoba,

We've just added these 2 quote servers:

Wall Street Journal
Wall Street Journal (Historical)

For instructions, see:

Thanks for your help with this quote server.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Many thanks, that's awesome.

The Historical retrieving from WSJ works great, but there is no retrieving of the current price (no error message neither). My attempt with the symbol : "fx/EURCAD".

Thanks.

Hi Djobydjoba,

I suspect the problem is you're expecting a price for 8/3, but you're getting a price for 8/2 when using the current WSJ server. I just tested this symbol, and it retrieved the price correctly for 8/2. This server is not getting the 15 minute delayed price, it is getting the most recent price listed under the "Historical Prices" section.
Thanks,
Mark

Indeed, you're right, that's it. So there's no possibility to grab the last price ? We'll have to wait it goes to the historical list ?

Hi Djobydjoba,

We could possibly add another quote server to get the 15 minute delayed price, or maybe change the way the current server works now. We can consider this.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

The work done here is already great, so I don't want to have to ask for more. Nevertheless, having the last price is quite important, at least for me. The price at Day+1, when there is volatility on the markets, it can be very frustrating. If you think something could be done... But it's not urgent in any way.

Many thanks.
