Portfolio Value report at a date

Comments, critical feedback, praise, or suggestions for new features.

If I run an Open Lots report as at 30 June 2011 I get a complete list (by lot) of all open trades at that date - even if since hidden.
If I run Portfolio Value report at the same date, while the value total is the same as the Open Lots report, those trades closed since that date (and hidden) do not appear.
As I only need to run this report once a year (for tax purposes) its not a big issue but it does seem non-intuitive.

Hi Alan,

The difference is one report is listing by investment, and the other by transaction.

If you mark an investment as hidden, then it doesn't matter what date range settings you use in your report. Reports that list by investment only display non-hidden investments and will not display your hidden investments. (This assumes you have "VIew / Hidden Investments" turned off. If you turn on that option, everything is shown.)

Besides hiding investments, you also have the option to have FM automatically determine whether to show an investment based on shares owned. See "Options / Report Preferences... / General / Do Not Display Investments with Zero Share Balance".

Reports that list by transaction (Capital Gains, Open Lots, and Investment Transaction) display all transactions, whether from hidden investments or not.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark - and thanks for the quick response.

I understand the points you make. Its just that its not intuitive (to me anyway) to select the Portfolio Valuation report for a particular date and also need to separately adjust the date for the hiding of zero balances to that date. I assume that most users would have hiding of zero balances set to current date.

As its a seldom used report I don't see a real need to change the existing arrangement (although it would be nice to have an option to automatically un-hide non zero balances to the report date ) but a text caution in the report setup window would make it clear.

Hi Alan,

Okay, thanks for the feedback.

In case you haven't seen it there is a way to hide/un-hide all investments as of a particular date. See "File / File Operations / Hide Sold Investments...".
Thanks,
Mark
