Tax Treatment of Portfolios

Comments, critical feedback, praise, or suggestions for new features.

It would be helpful to add an attribute to the Portfolio Properties parameters for the definition of the "Tax Treatment" of the investments held in that account / Portfolio;

Such as
- Tax Deferred
- Tax Exempt
- Taxable
- Foreign Taxable
etc.

Also, would it be possible to add a Pie / Stacked Bar graph (and/or a report) to display information based on the "Tax Treatment"

Is this something that could be considered in future updates?

Hi Allan,

Thanks for the ideas. I can see those being helpful. Just in case you haven't seen it, you can mark at the investment level a "Tax-Free" property. This is used in the Capital Gain reports.
Thanks,
Mark

Hey Mark

Consider me among those who think this would be a great addition to the already very good program, especially if I could attribute a wash sale calculation to one portfolio (taxable) and not another (nontaxable).

Any more thoughts in regards to adding additional tax treatment fields? At the very least, at the portfolio level, a "Tax Deferred" category which would be addressable in reports and graphs the same way that "Tax Free" is currently.

In fact Tax Free account are limited to the TFSA in Canada / Roth IRA in US / and UK tax free accounts. Retirement accounts are Tax Deferred. It would be very useful to differentiate this.

Hi Allan,

Sorry, there are still only 2 states for your tax status, taxable or tax-free. One other possibility you could consider using is creating sub-portfolios for the tax status. You could organize your accounts into all the different tax status categories you want. You can do this in parallel to your existing portfolio hierarchy, so you don't modify that. Use "link" sub-portfolios to create this parallel portfolio hierarchy by tax status.
Thanks,
Mark
