Mark,
I'd like to be able to do a Portfolio Values or Asset Allocation report across a client's sub-portfolios organized using a hierarchy of Investments. Specifically
Cash Investment 1 Investment 2
Fixed Income (Bonds) US Bonds Bond 1 Bond 2 Bond Mutual Fund 1 Bond Mutual Fund 2 Bond ETF 1 etc. Foreign Bonds Bond 1 etc.
Equity (Stocks) US Stocks Stock 1 Stock 2 Stock Mutual Fund 1 Stock Mutual Fund 2 Stock ETF 1 etc. Foreign Stocks Stock 1 etc.
OK, we have Investment Type with a fixed number of preassigned labels that can't be edited and 100 Asset Type labels that can be edited. This would require the ability to create a hierarchy within some existing fields or adding new fields which you're probably not willing to do.
I could get a crude approach to what I want on the Portfolio Values report if I restricted my use of Investment Type to Cash, Bonds, and Stocks, and sub-totaled on Investment Type. It would be nice to be able to further categorize investments on the report by Asset Type nested under Investment Type.
I can't do this in the Asset Allocation report because I can only sub-total by sub-portfolio. Could you allow sub-totaling on Investment Type?
Is there another way I could do this now?
Elliot PS The preview is not showing the nesting as I've entered it -- I hope the final does but you should be able to figure out what I mean even if it doesn't.

Hi Elliot,
Thanks for the idea/feedback. I think what you're looking for is the ability to subtotal by multiple items. Currently you cannot do this in any report. You can either turn off subtotals, or subtotal by one item (Sub-Portfolio, Investment Type, Investment Goal, Asset Type, or Symbol).

Mark,
Yes, but some reports (specifically Asset Allocation -- and Custom too) limit me to subtotaling by Sub Portfolio -- I'd need to do it by Investment Type.

Hi Elliot,
In a Custom report you can subtotal by any of these:
Sub-Portfolio, Investment Type, Investment Goal, Asset Type, or Symbol
When you subtotal by anything other that Sub-Portfolio however, you can only "List By" Investment or <None>.

Mark,
OK, I've done some recoding of Investment Type to just Stock, Bond, and Cash. I can get close to what I want on the customized Portfolio Values report, but not on the Customized Asset Allocation because if I subtotal by Investment Type I can only list by Investment -- could you relax that and let me list by Asset Type? Then I'd have a really great AA report.

Hi Elliot,
This is not a small change for us. Adding more flexibility between subtotal and listing by options is a good improvement, but it isn't something that will be easily added into a minor update. We can consider this for a future major update though.
