Mark,

2 issues.

Reading the features list I thought you had altered the internal/external routines to catch and cancel out inter-account transfers at sub-portfolio levels. My test run doesn't seem to have changed -- they are still being counted as both contributions and withdrawals.

I accidentally set a date range for the report 1/1/10 to 12/31/11. Got 2 columns, the left one labeled Statement was through 12/31/10, the right one is labeled YTD, 1/1-12/31/11 and appears to be year to date. It would seem to me you'd want an error trapping routine to detect an end date beyond the current date. Failing that, could the column header have the end date of the last pricing rather than 12/31/11?

Hi Elliot,

Yes, we did change this internal/external calculation. For example, if you have:

Code: Select all
- Master
  - Account 1
  - Account 2

and you are reporting at the "Master" level, and you have a sell from Account 1 and a corresponding buy in Account 2, then this will be considered internal when reporting at the "Master" level. However, if you are reporting at the "Account 1" or "Account 2" level, it is external.

If you have transactions you do not expect to see, create an Investment Transactions report, and filter out everything but external transactions, so you can see the source.

If you set a date range of 1/1/2010 to 12/31/2011, this is what the first "Statement" column should show, not to 12/31/2010... I guess we could offer a warning that you've set the date past today or your latest recorded price, but I wouldn't want to prevent someone from doing this if that is what they really wanted.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

OK on the date range issue but I do think you should give a warning if the date range goes beyond the data -- a typo is easy to make.

On the Internal/External I've still got the problem. When looking at the Master level (your example) transaction report filtered for external only, I'm getting Transfers In and balancing Transfers Out, and Sells for foreign tax. The account fee transactions don't show (because they are "reinvested?"). On the Executive Summary, at the Master Level, I'm getting Contributions equal to the Transfers in, Withdrawals equal to double the transfers out plus the sells, and the correct account fees paid. I think the Contributions should be 0, the Withdrawals should be the Sells (foreign tax) and the Account Fees. Although since the Accounts Fees appear as a separate line on the report I could make a case that they should not be included in Withdrawals. Perhaps the Account Fees could be a "sub" under Withdrawals? They clearly should not be doubled up in the Withdrawal amount.

My setup is:
Client Household
His Account
His IRA Account
Joint Account
Fee Account.

At management fee time I do a Transfer Out from Joint and a matching transfer in to the Fee Account, then an Account Fee in the fee account.

Hi Elliot,

It sounds like the problem is because you have them recorded as Transfers. Transfer In and Transfer Out transactions are always considered external. Instead, if you use buy/sell these can be considered internal if they are matched, and within the same sub-portfolio being reported on.

Yes, reinvestments are internal.
Thanks,
Mark
