Importing Transactions isn't working from brokersXpress

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Chandeleur » Mon Aug 03, 2009 9:25 am

I've tried to download transactions via .qif files and excel from brokersXpress. I am trying to download transactions into an account that used to be with Fidelity. When I click "File, Import, Transcations, .QIF..." then get to the "Previewing Importing Transactions" page, nothing appears. I've tried various changes, but nothing is working for me. :?

Hi Chandeleur,

If you look in your QIF file with a text editor (like Notepad), do you see your transactions?

What import settings are you using? Make sure you are allowing Fund Manager to create new sub-portfolios and investments as needed for you, and you are importing all securities for all dates.
Thanks,
Mark

BTW...I went into Fundmanager and used the transaction upload button and input the account number and password and obtained the info I needed that way. But, I should be able to import the info via the Transaction import from brokersXpress method as well, and the preview transcation screen is blank that way as well. I feel like it's something so minor that's causing this.
Thanks,
Bryan

Hi Bryan,

To import a QIF file, you must use "File / Import / Transactions / Quicken (*.QIF)...". It sounds like you were trying to use "File / Import / Transactions / BrokersXpress...". This is a different format, available from BrokersXpress for RIAs.
Thanks,
Mark

It's weird. I'm trying "File / Import / Transactions / Quicken (*.QIF)..." right now to no avail. Yet, a moment ago, on a client I downloaded info into via the "retail" method by putting her account number into and her password, that worked. Something is preventing the info from importing and being visible in the "Previewing Importing Transactions" page.

I should be able to download via the RIA method as well, but that's not working either.

Hi Bryan,

You can email me a .QIF file, and also a .TRN file (RIA method), and I can try importing here, and maybe provide better feedback. To send an attachment, just go fill out the regular email contact form with any simple message. Once you submit, you'll see a regular email address you can use to send attachments.
Thanks,
Mark

I am having very similar problems with my Interactive Brokers ccount. I have downloaded and saved a Quicken file, but when I try to upload it, there is nothing there. I opened the file with a notepad and there is data there, so I have no idea what the problem is?? I don't know what else to do.

Hi Paul70,

Please try this:

1) Select "File / Import / Transactions / Quicken (*.QIF)...".
2) Browse to select your QIF file for import.
3) Choose "All Securities"
4) Choose "All Dates"
5) Choose "With Matching Sub-Portfolio Name as QIF Account"
6) Turn ON "Create New Sub-Portfolios as Needed" under "Master Portfolio"
7) Turn OFF "Skip Transactions Already In Fund Manager"
8) Turn ON "Create New Investments as Needed"
9) Press "Next"

Do you see your transactions listed in the Preview window?

Do not press "Finish", as we imported with "Skip Transactions Already in Fund Manager" turned on, just to see if FM could read your QIF file okay. You don't want to import duplicates. If you do see your transactions, go "Back", and turn off that option, and then press "Next" again. If you no longer see your transactions, then it is because they are already in your Fund Manager data files.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
brokersXpress allows me to go into each clients account to download activity. One choice of format is Quicken. I download the file and try to import it to fund manager using the .QIF format, and nothing. I tried the suggestions you gave the previous person and I see nothing in the Preview Transactions window.

Is there something wrong with brokersXpress? I can't get info into FM going the route for RIAs or the way a client would import it either.

I checked "Skip Transactions..." and this time it downloaded transactions after I downloaded the file from bX for the 2nd time. I don't know why this didn't work the first time.

Hi Bryan,

Since you are an RIA with brokersXpress, you may prefer to use their TRN/POS files instead of downloading QIF files. With the TRN/POS files, you can do all accounts with a single download, rather than importing a single QIF file for each account. Also, with POS files you can reconcile your accounts, which you can't do with a QIF file.
Thanks,
Mark

I don't know how to download *.POS files from brokersXpress. Where do I obtain those files?

Hi Bryan,

I think we've figured this out already, in our separate e-mail thread, but to answer you, it is under the "PortfolioCenter Download" and in the "Daily Files" choose "Download Reconciliation File".
Thanks,
Mark
