Historical Prices Not Downloading

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby clay c » Mon Nov 04, 2024 1:33 pm

Hi mark
I have the latest update- 2024.18.7 and the latest quote module- 614, and I can't download any historical prices. I have tried downloading prices for individual names and used different sources and nothing is working. Downloading today's prices works fine. Any help??? Thanks,

Clay

Hello,

1) What quote server are you using?
2) What is an example ticker symbol that won't update?

I just tested Yahoo (Historical) and it appears to be working correctly. If you're still having trouble, please send us the detailed price retrieve log from "Help / Logs / Price Retrieve (Detailed)...".
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark
I was using Yahoo historical, and the price I was trying to individually download was for Google. I waited a few hours until after market hours and everything worked again. The Yahoo historical server was slower than I have ever seen it, and after 20-30 minutes I would get a "can't update any investments" message. Is this the best we have for historical prices? Thanks,

Clay

Hi Clay,

Yahoo recently changed (requiring a premium paid membership to download only pricing data), and for the historical Yahoo servers we had to make some changes to keep it working at all. It is now much slower, and it also appears to be intermittent, especially after making many requests. Some suggestions:

1) Find other solutions than using Yahoo (Historical), like update daily so you don't need to rely on getting historical prices. Yahoo is still very fast, but Yahoo (Historical) is not. You can automate with a command line the daily price retrieval.

2) Use other historical quote servers. See details/options here: https://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/intrtv.html

- Tiingo (Historical) is good, and supports both funds/stocks, but depending on how many quotes you need, you may need to pay for their premium membership
- Stooq (Historical) is very good, but may require you to change some symbols, and doesn't support mutual funds.
- If you need historical fund pricing, check out Financial Times - Funds (1M Historical).

3) If you need to use Yahoo (Historical), make smaller requests. Right mouse click on a selection and use "Retrieve Selected Historical Prices". Retrieve only a smaller number at a time. Turning off the options to retrieve splits/distributions will also help. If you do need to retrieve splits/distributions from Yahoo, make sure you're using 2024.18.5 or later, which is significantly faster than old versions when splits/distributions are involved.
Thanks,
Mark

Do you know if this issue with large requests is still there and we have to make smaller requests, or the problem has potentially been solved?

Thanks.

Hi Djobydjoba,

I'm not certain, but the number of complaints has dropped to zero about this server, so I believe it is more stable now than it used to be.
Thanks,
Mark

After trying several servers without success, just signed up for Tiingo and their historical is working for my MFs & Stocks. What isn't working are the 4 averages that I used with Yahoo. I have tried different variations (leave off the ^) and others to no avail.
^IXIC NASDAQ
^DJU Utility Index
^DJI Dow Jones
^GSPC S&P
If anyone has the equivalent tickers at Tiingo, I would appreciate them.

THX in advance.

Hi Jim,

I'm not sure that Tiingo offers index quotes. They offer documentation on other investment types here, but there is no mention of indices.

You might prefer to use Stooq (Historical) for indices. It is also very fast, and offers quite a few indices. You can see a list of their main indices here. Their symbols for the indices you mentioned are:

^NDQ NASDAQ COMP
^DJU DOW JONES UTIL
^DJI DOW JONES INDU
^SPX S&P500
Thanks,
Mark
