Getting started - Watchlists and Alerts

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby Bsrr » Mon Aug 19, 2024 5:26 am

Hi Mark - perhaps you can get me started as I am struggling to find what I need in the Forum and in the Documentation:
1. Creating Watchlists - appears you create a Portfolio, add the investments you want to watch. And then use FM features as needed for the Watchlist. Is this correct?
2. Alerts - once you create an Alert or Alerts for various investments is there a way to Report on all the Alerts you have set up? And/or to edit your Alerts.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi Bsrr,

1) Yes, this is correct. It is usually best to set up a sub-portfolio, separate from your holdings, something like this:

Code: Select all
- Master Portfolio
  - My Holdings
    - Account 1
    - Account 2
  - My Watchlist

2) Yes. See the "Investment Transactions" report and the Data Register. The Investment Transaction report can list all your alerts, and you can show completed, active, and/or expired alerts. When creating this report, click on the "Filter" button to choose which alerts you want to see. You might also want to turn off all the other transaction types if you only want to focus on the alerts.

In the Data Register you can view/edit your alerts. In the dropdown for "Data Type", choose "Alerts" at the bottom. You can then see all the alerts for that investment, and add/edit/delete from here.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark, is there a way to upload a watch list? I've tried many methods and even when I try to use the correct fields I get errors that state that there's problems with my watch list. Date is not correct (when I think it is), I just want to upload the tickers as I don't have prices for all the companies / stocks.

Any suggestions most appreciated.

Kind regards
Road Jackson

Hi Road Jackson,

Yes, you can do this. It sounds like you're using the generic price import? Maybe you can share the file (or a line from the file), and the import settings you're using? I can hopefully help with the details.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark, thanks for your quick reply. Attached is an example of the last version that wasn't accepted. Kind Regards

Hi roadjackson,

I imported that file successfully with the command:

File / Import / Transactions / Generic...

using the format string from the first line in your file:

SYMB,TRAN,MM/DD/YY,ANUM,BNUM,CNUM,!REM

It does give a warning, because the first line is not imported. You don't need the headers in the importing line, and it actually causes a warning, but the other 3 lines imported fine.

Please note, doing it this way, you will own 1 share. If that's okay, that's fine, but if your goal is to have a watchlist of investments with no shares owned, use the generic price import instead, at:

File / Import / Prices / Generic...

with the settings:

Specify Date: OFF
Specify Symbol: OFF
Input format: SYMB,XX,MM/DD/YY,NAV,XX
Create new investments as needed: ON

and you can import that same file you attached with these settings.
Thanks,
Mark
