PRICES: Copy Transactions

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby ricbertsch » Tue Mar 26, 2024 3:17 pm

I know that assets are tied to account number but are the transactions? As we have transferred securities between accounts due to death and would like to reflect the transactions history from the old account in the new account. The old accounts are closed out via a transfer out journal transaction and the new account shows the transfer in journal. Would it be okay to transfer all the transactions from the old account including the Transfer out?

Also with that said, on the Old Decedent account that had closed assets (EG. ATT closed in Nov 2022) prior to its transfer would it be okay to just copy them into the new account?

Hi ricbertsch,

Transactions belong to investments, which belong to sub-portfolios (accounts), so essentially transactions also belong in accounts. If you've moved some investments, you can either record this with transfers, or simply move the whole investment file, and not record anything. If you move the whole investment, you are moving all the transaction history as well, as investments belong to whatever account they're in. You can't have some transactions within an investment belong to 1 account, and some different transactions belong to another account. All of the transactions in an investment belong to that investment.

The benefit of simply moving the whole investment is you keep the history together, and it is simple. The disadvantage is that it isn't as obvious from the transactions that this investment moved accounts on a particular date. You could record a note in either the sub-portfolio, or in a specific investment.

If you do want to use transfers, you can use the "Transfer Between" wizard, so it will help you move all the lots, and maintain their tax basis. You'll get multiple transfers, one for each lot transferred.
Thanks,
Mark
