FM Upgraded - Now not all stocks are updating.

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby RickB » Tue Mar 24, 2009 12:41 am

I have been using FM - v8.1.0 without any problems but I have just re-built my pc so I thought it would be a good time to upgrade to the latest version.
After the upgrade when I do an internet price update only half of my stocks are updated. Do you know what I may have done wrong or how to fix it?

Thanks,

Rick.

Hi Rick,

How are you verifying that half were not updated? Are you looking in the Data Register under the 'Prices' data type?

What quote server are you using? Do you have the latest quote module? Can you give me an example ticker symbol that isn't updating?

Thanks for your prompt reply Mark,
I usually use AUSTRALIAN STOCK EXCHANGE but as it isn't working at the moment I am using Yahoo-Finance.
When I do an update FM replys with a msgbox "Updated 5 Investments"
An example of a stock that won't update is ORG or 'WESN'.
Actually when I look at each stock's Share Price graph except for the two above they have the latest date, so it seems to be the Msg Box not reporting properly.

Thanks,

RickB

Also i just read your tips page at the link you provided and the problem stocks all have 'Internet retrieve' turned on, Default server.

I just tried ORG manually in Yahoo and received the following:
Origin Energy Limited (ORG.AX)
On Mar 24: 14.480 AUD Down 0.120 (0.82%)

When I enter the symbol in FM I assume that I don't need the '.AX' do I as none of the other stocks have it either?

Thanks Again,

RickB

Hi RickB,

Yes, you do need to modify your symbols when working with Yahoo to have the .AX extension. If you don't want to do this, you may wait a little bit, and the ASX server will be back working again. It should be back up today.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi RickB,

If you use your web browser to look up the other quotes without the extension, do they show okay? What is an example ticker that you can update from Yahoo with the .AX extension?

BTW, the ASX server is back up, you can get quote module 405 by selecting "Help / FM on the Web / Check for Updates...".
Thanks,
Mark

Hi RickB,

Yes, RIO seems to be fine without the .AX extension. ORG on the other hand needs the extension. This is just how Yahoo has them. I'm not sure why. You can determine whether or not the extension is required by going to Yahoo, and looking up the quote using your browser. For example, you can get the quote for RIO, but you have to use ORG.AX to get that quote.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

We must be looking at different Yahoo pages.

On http://au.finance.yahoo.com if I enter RIO their system adds the .ax extension. The same happens with ORG.

Anyway I guess it doesn't matter, I'll try ASX tonight when I get home.

Does it explain why the msg box doesn't display the actual number of stocks that were apparently updated (based on the update date)?

Cheers,

RickB

Hi RickB,

I think you are looking up quotes using your browser on what we call "Yahoo - Australia & New Zealand". Note, this is a different server than just plain "Yahoo".

Yahoo - Australia & New Zealand: http://au.finance.yahoo.com
Yahoo: http://finance.yahoo.com

Take a look at your default quote server. If it supported RIO, then you are probably really using "Yahoo", and not "Yahoo - Australia & New Zealand", as that site does use RIO.AX. Basically, you have to make sure you're going to the same server with your browser as you have set in Fund Manager. There are links to all the servers here:
