WSJ versus Yahoo

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Mark, could you comment on the pros/cons of using the WSJ server versus Yahoo? In short, why has Yahoo been the default? Will it still be faster than WSJ after your expected changes? Thanks.

Hi Tim M,

Previously Yahoo was much faster, as it retrieved 10 quotes in a single request. It looks like we're going to have to change Yahoo, so it is only able to get 1 quote/request. The speed will likely be similar, or a bit slower than WSJ. The WSJ server also requires that you have the investment "type" set properly in order to get a quote.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark -- made google RT default server and changed all Canadian symbols to google version. Question is, what alternative server can be used for US option quotes?

Mark -- thanks I'm aware of that. I'm just wanting to plan for the future, which could be anytime if Yahoo pulls the plug.

Hi danmcco,

Yahoo (Options) is the only quote server I'm aware of that offers option quotes.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

Where / how do we find the right "type" for the WSJ quote server?

Hi Sean,

It is usually clear, just based on what the investment is, but you can also tell by looking at the URL on the WSJ site. For examples, see:

Hi Mark
Thanks for the new quote module. Yahoo price quotes are now much slower for my portfolios of UK stocks. But as I only usually did an end of day update I can live with it.

I thought I might try WSJ and Google price updates for separate sub portfolios (UK stocks):

1. Google: This seems to work fine without changing the symbol BUT you have to change the price factor as it prices in pence as opposed to Yahoo in £

2. WSJ: I could not get this to work for UK stocks. I tried changing the symbol to UK: xxx and UK. xxx with the type "stock"

Hi rupertpage,

Did you try looking up your UK quotes on the WSJ site?
Thanks,
Mark
