how do i change the price of my Money Market unit?

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby ThomasK » Tue Jun 05, 2012 10:08 pm

The first portfolio i created was with the wizard and I did create the default cash account just fine and it tracked all the cash in/out for the investments under that sub-portfolio well.

However, i want to use a different instrument....i did not use "NONE" as the symbol but used an ETF "CMR.to" which is $50/unit.

How do I FM to consider it as cash with a price of $1/unit or did i miss something in the tutorial?

I'm thinking that if it was "cash" with a symbol "NONE" then price would be what exactly? $1?

Thanks.

Hi ThomasK,

Usually when you pick a cash investment that investment should have a price of 1. An ETF with a price near $50 is probably not what you want. Whenever you record a transaction that has a corresponding default cash account entry, that entry will be recorded at whatever price you have for that investment on the transaction date. For cash type investments you keep the price at 1, and the shares are equal to the value.

You can view all your closing prices in the Data Register with the data type set to "Prices".

You can really use any symbol you want for your cash investment, as you typically aren't retrieving prices for your cash investment. See "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve", and make sure "Retrieve Price" is turned off. All your transactions are done at a price of 1, and all your closing prices are 1.
Thanks,
Mark
