Dividends Not Importing

Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager

Postby oyz79 » Mon Jan 09, 2012 8:11 pm

I imported a csv file and then manually added some buys/sells. Dividends that were not originally imported in the csv are not importing from yahoo.

When retrieving prices the box to distribute is checked and I am importing the full date range of transactions. I have not had this issue with any other accounts I have created. Any ideas?

I exported the portfolio and attached it, any buy/sell after 9/12/11 was manually added by me in the software program

Hi oyz79,

It sounds like you are trying to retrieve historical dividends using the "Yahoo (Historical)" quote server? If they aren't retrieving, please go to Yahoo's website with your browser, and verify they offer the dividends for the symbol you are using. On Yahoo's site, once you look up the symbol, click on "Historical Prices" on the left menu. Then, click on the option "Dividends Only", and choose "Get Prices", to see if they have the dividends on this symbol. If they do, and you aren't able to retrieve them in Fund Manager, please give me an example ticker symbol you're not able to retrieve.
Thanks,
Mark

Yes, using Yahoo (historical).

The following all paid a dividend and none imported - I could manually import them but it defeats the purpose of importing dividends going forward (there may be a few more that were paid in January).

Dividend BMY Bristol-Myers Squibb Company 10/6/2011 348 0.33 $114.84
Dividend NI NiSource Inc. 10/27/2011 559 0.23 $128.57
Dividend FE FirstEnergy Corp. 11/3/2011 266 0.55 $146.30
Dividend SO Southern Company 11/3/2011 234 0.473 $110.68
Dividend ED Consolidated Edison Inc. 11/14/2011 144 0.6 86.4
Dividend DUK Duke Energy Corporation 11/16/2011 522 0.25 130.5
Dividend AEE Ameren Corporation 12/5/2011 332 0.4 132.8
Dividend PPL PPL Corporation 12/7/2011 294 0.35 102.9

Hello oyz79,

I just test retrieved BMY from Yahoo (Historical) and it retrieved all the dividends properly. Here are some things to check:

1) Just right mouse click on BMY only, and choose "Retrieve Selected Historical Prices". Make sure it is going to "Yahoo (Historical)" for this quote. If not, check under "Investment Properties... / Internet Retrieve" to see what historical quote server you have selected.

2) Use the Data Register with the "Distributions (all)" data type selected to verify whether or not the distributions were downloaded.
Thanks,
Mark

Ok I see it in the data register for the symbol, but it was not paying to the money market account and is not visible in the money market register. The money market account is setup as the default cash account for the portfolio, so is there a reason why dividends are not paying to it? I have checked the box to distribute dividends when retrieving historical quotes.

Hi oyz79,

Did you own shares as of the dates of the distributions? If you go look at some of the imported distributions, what was the total amount of the distribution, and what was the distribution/share? Are they recorded as distributed or reinvested? You can see this in the Data Register under the "Distributions (all)" data type.

If you didn't own shares on the date of the distribution, then a distribution for $0 will be recorded with a distribution/share as reported by Yahoo. Since the distribution is $0, there is no money to deposit into any assigned default cash account.
Thanks,
Mark

Using BMY as an example:

7/11/11 $28.89 / 348 shares / total $10053.72 / fee 0 / type purchase

In Distributions, I see a 10/6/11 and 1/4/12 dividend for $114.84 and $118.32 respectively.

When I view the Money Market for the account, I see no corresponding distribution to the money market account. All of the purchases/sales are listed there and dividend distributions I imported from a csv file pre-9/8/11 are listed.

Hi oyz79,

Here are a couple things you can try:

1) Verify that your money market is assigned as the default cash account. It must be assigned at the time of the import for the corresponding entries to be deposited.

2) After doing #1, try deleting just one of the distributions, and re-retrieving historical prices for just that one distribution date, and see if it works?
Thanks,
Mark

Yes to step 1

Deleting a distribution for BMY and then reimporting solved the issue. So I'm assuming I'll have to do that for each distribution since September.

Do you know what caused this issue so I can avoid it in the future?

Hi oyz79,

My guess would be there was no default cash account assigned at the time of the original import. The cash account must be assigned when the transactions are retrieved/entered/imported.
Thanks,
Mark
