Questions about updating prices or transactions in Fund Manager
by fiscalis » Mon Jul 12, 2010 5:18 pm
Hi Mark,
Is there any way to do a 'batch import' of prices across multiple days using the price file downloaded from TD Ameritrade? The way I envision this working would be the way you can import multiple day's worth of transactions all with one step.
Right now I'm still on version 9.x Advisor.
THANKS.
Bill

Hi Bill,
You cannot only import multiple price files. When importing a price file, it is one file at a time. However, when you import transactions, Fund Manager also looks for a *.PRI file with the same base filename as each of the *.TRN files you're importing, and imports prices from that file. As long as you leave your .PRI file in the same folder as your .TRN file, all your prices should automatically get imported when you import transactions.
If for some reason you didn't have your .PRI files in the same folder, and have already imported transactions, you can import transactions again, and just check the option to ignore transactions already imported. You can use the option to import all transaction files in a folder, and every corresponding .PRI file will also be imported, even if there are no new transactions to import.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for this reply. Is there any reason (switches, settings, etc), that would disable this? I just did an import of transactions and checked one of my treasury bonds for an updated price and the last one (7/14) didn't come in even though it was listed in the .pri file.
Any ideas?
THANKS,
Bill

Hi Bill,
There is no regular option to disable this, but there is a registry option you would have had to set manually to disable this feature. Use "regedit" to look in here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Beiley Software\Fund Manager\CurrentVersion\miscprefs
and see if you have a value of "skipTpriceimport" set to 1. If so, that would cause the skipping of price imports during a transaction import.
Some other things to check:
1) Make sure your investment has the symbol set the same as in the .PRI file.
2) If you import the .PRI file directly, does that update your investment's prices?
3) We have made various improvements in the importing routines. If you do the transaction import using version 10.6, does that work? If you do this test, please make a backup copy of your data first, as 10.x uses a new file format over 9.x.

Hi Mark -
I have no such registry key.
The import works fine via a price import only - so I believe this means all the symbols are correct.
I have TDA download files for the 12th, 13th, 14th & 15th, all expanded and in the same directory. For some reason, when I do a transaction update, the price file comes in for the 12th and 13th, but not the 14th or 15th.
I don't have version 10 on my machine.
THANKS.
Bill

Hi Bill,
If you'd like for me to test it on 10.x, you can email me the price, transaction, and a sample investment file that won't update.
If you'd like to try it yourself, install 10.x from our website. Either make a backup of all your data, or just make sure to exit without saving.

Well - after trying the complex and then failing, I went back to the simple. The days that would not import had no .trn file in the folder. I wrongly assumed that there was a .trn file coming with each day and there is not. Therefore it appears I need to do a separate price import on each day if I want to have a complete price history for the assets that I cannot update via the internet (like U.S. Treasuries).
Please let me know if I've missed anything here or if there is an easier way to get the prices into FM.
THANKS!
Bill

Hi Bill,
This makes sense. FM looks for matching .PRI files whenever it imports a .TRN file, so if you don't have a .TRN file, it won't pull in the .PRI file either. Maybe a better way to do this is when you import all .TRN files in a folder, it also looks for all .PRI files in that folder, instead of only ones with the same base names. We'll look into making this improvement.

Hi Bill,
This was a pretty quick improvement, so we'll have this included in the official 10.7 release.

Hi Bill,
There is no firm schedule on when 10.7 will be released, but probably within the next couple of weeks. If you're interested in trying it now, I can send you a pre-release by e-mail. If you'd like to do this, go here:
http://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/email.html
and send me an email, so I can respond with the pre-release.
