Antialiasing?

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager graphs.

Postby Djobydjoba » Sat Nov 11, 2017 7:24 am

Hi Mark,

I was wondering if antialiasing, for the rendering of the graphical objects, could be feasible with the graphical engine of Fund Manager?
I saw the adoption of antialiasing in some softwares and it often brings a nice touch.

Hi Djobydjoba,

Our "graphical engine" is custom built. There may be techniques that could be added. We would have to research how to implement something like that.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

I thought that standard graphical objects / libraries were used, so the "graphical engine".

Just to be less cryptic, a nice page on aliasing / anti-aliasing:

Now, I know why I've opened this topic

In fact, sometimes the aliasing is almost indiscernible in FM, sometimes is it quite important. In the screenshot under, the aliasing for the three trendlines is different:

TL1 has less aliasing (as the moving averages), TL3 the most (TL2 between the two). TL1 has a better look than TL3! The aliasing is related to the number (or lenght) of micro-segments used to draw the lines, why such a difference between the trendlines? Is it related to their slope? (auto-answer: yes)

Here's another screenshot where the aliasing of the trendlines is important (the 1, 2 and 3 in particular). Again, the difference of aliasing between lines is surprising, no aliasing with trendline 4 and MAs (look better!)

Hi Djobydjoba,

Thanks, yes, I can see your points. It is quite noticeable in some cases.
Thanks,
Mark

To complete:

By rotating a trendline from one of its endpoints, we can see the changes on the aliasing for each angle. The best aspect for a trendling seems to be with a 45° slope (or even better, 0° or 90° )

But when the slope in near 0° or 90°, but not exactly these values, the broken line effect is not very nice... Often, I try to adjust the line precisely to have a perfect flat line, it is nicer. But counterproductive.

I really like the graphs in Fund Manager and I am accustomed to this behavior. I can imagine very well this is how the line is calculated and drawn, so difficult to change. But anyway, it had to be said :).

Hi Djobydjoba,

As you can probably tell FM is currently just drawing a straight line from end point to end point. I do get your point on anti-aliasing.
Thanks,
Mark
