Yields at Top Of Graph Suddenly Displaying "N.A."

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager graphs.

Postby El Wealtho » Thu Dec 04, 2014 7:16 pm

After years of no problems in this regard, suddenly the ROI yield calculations along the top of the graph are displaying "N.A."

For some investments and portfolios (most), all of the fields are N.A. Some investments display several N.A. and figures in the rest. Some even display all figures.

TWR yields appear fine in most cases but in some portfolio-gain charts they are all N.A.

Am not aware of any changes made to the program at my end. Cannot think where to start to look.

Thx.

Hi El Wealtho,

Take a look at "Help / Graph Calculation Log..." and that should explain the reasons for the N/A yields.
Thanks,
Mark

Did that, thanks, and it says, several times:

TWR yields not available for objects containing different currencies (THB and CAD). Turn on "View / Exchange Rate Adjusted" to see yield with data adjusted to default currency.

(Same messages for ROI yields.)

"View Exchange Rate Adjusted" makes no difference: still all N.A.

I gather FM has been altered in the way it calculates these? (There was no problem with this for years.) Would be good to understand what is happening and why.

Thx.

Hi El Wealtho,

After you turn on "View / Exchange Rate Adjusted", if you're still getting "N/A", look at "Help / Graph Calculation Log..." again. It may be for a different reason, like interpolation range settings.

The option to not automatically calculate yields on mixed currencies is new to Fund Manager 2014. The idea is that you don't want to add apples/oranges. You need to convert everything to a single currency before reporting a yield, or summing values. See this FAQ:

Nope, for both ROI and TWR, Exchange Rate Adjusted and Not, the log is exactly the same: 7 lines with some dates and the message I copied above.

Thx.

Hi El Wealtho,

Then one of your investments included in whatever being graphed is either:

- Assigned as an exchange rate investment under "Options / Currency Settings..."
or
- Has an investment property of "Exchange Rate" as the "Investment Type", and a currency other than the default currency.

For exchange rate investments it works best if you leave them assigned to the default currency.
Thanks,
Mark

Yes thanks, the second suggestion seems to have fixed it.

A problem with leaving the assigned currency as the default is that the graph display is wrong when "Exchange Rate Adjusted" is clicked. i.e. the units are wrong (showing the default currency rather than the proper units). An example currency investment is CADTHB. The graph shows THB per CAD and should be in THB rather than the default currency which is CAD.

Thx.

Hi El Wealtho,

Interesting point... I guess you could really say that exchange rate type investments should have no assigned currency, as they are really not either of the 2 currencies, but an exchange rate between the 2.
Thanks,
Mark
