Prior Year Divident

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby henrikk » Sat Feb 24, 2024 2:29 pm

I received a "Prior Year Dividend" on 1/3/2024 for shares owned on 12/31/2023. Examining my 1099 it appears this dividend is counted as received in 2023. The "Distribution Summary..." report however does not include it for 2023. It does include it for 2024. So both the 2023 and 2024 distribution summaries are incorrect for taxation purposes. I can manually move the transaction from 1/3/2024 to 12/31/2023 which solves the report problem, but then should I fetch transactions from the account the distribution recorded on 1/3/2024 appears again as a new transaction. I can of course manually adjust date ranges and uncheck the transaction, but that is error prone. Is there a way to allocate prior year distributions to the previous year in reports? I am using FM 2022 and plan on upgrading.

Hi henrikk,

No, there isn't a way to force a dividend dated 1/3/24 to show up in a 2023 distribution summary report. The report simply goes off dates of the distributions.

If you choose to move the date to last year, you can avoid getting duplicates when you retrieve transactions by using the date range filter. You shouldn't have to manually adjust the date range. FM remembers on a per sub-portfolio basis the date you last retrieved. If you're saving your portfolio file (*.mm4) and you always retrieve the same sub-portfolio, it should default the starting date to the date you last retrieved.
Thanks,
Mark
