Gain column question

Questions on using, creating, or understanding data in Fund Manager reports.

Postby larryw » Thu Oct 25, 2018 4:45 pm

I have an investment that appears to be transferred in the month of April 2018 with 0 balance before that date. There a dividends paid each month after that and then in Aug 2018 the full balance shows as a redemption in the Data Register.

When I run a year to date report the investment shows an open balance of 0, Contributions equal 0, and amounts in Withdrawals and With-distribution that results in a 0 balance as ending balance. However the Gain is showing a positive 59,000. Why is that?

Hi larryw,

Are the "Withdrawals" and "With-Distrib." columns 0? I didn't quite follow all the values you were mentioning. Maybe you can explicitly say/show all the values in that row of the report? From the documentation, here is the equation for Gain:

Gain = End Value + Withdrawals + With-Distrib. - Contributions - Beg Value
Thanks,
Mark

]Sorry to confuse. Here's a screen shot of just that investment. I see to I had a typo. Originally I said 59,000 but that should be 49,000 about.

Hi larryw,

Yes, the numbers are showing for that investment that you started with nothing, added nothing, but took out about $49K in withdrawals and distributions, so that is your gain. The gain is how much more you have than you added:

Gain = End Value + Withdrawals + With-Distrib. - Contributions - Beg Value

It might be that you have recorded that you got some shares for no cost, which is why you're having this large gain for no invested money. You can take a look at an Investment Transaction report for just this one investment for the same date range as your Performance report, and you can see all the transactions that result in those numbers.
Thanks,
Mark
