Access denied when trying to save/backup data

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

I've moved FM over to a new computer and experienced error messages when trying to save downloaded prices, transactions and trying to backup data saying first "Access Denied" then "Unable to save (investment descr)". The AutoSave feature is also denied. I tried reinstalling from the FM V10 disc I have which I thought corrected the problem, but after rebooting, still get the same error messages? What can I do to clear this up and save my data?

Hi awalker14,

Where are you saving your data, and what version of Windows are you using?

If you are using Windows Vista or 7, you can no longer save anywhere underneath C:\Program Files. In this case, you should move your data somewhere else, like "My Documents \ Fund Manager". For more on this issue, see:

Hi Mark,

I am trying v10.3 on Windows 7 Professional and I am unable to take a backup. I get error message "Registry Backup Failed". This also happens every time I exit the application.

After this, if I try to run FM again I get a whole bunch of errors of this type:

"MyWritePrivateProfileString failed with error 2: The system cannot find the file specified"

Any idea what might be going on?

Best,

Hello heinlein2302,

It sounds like for some reason you do not have write permission to the Fund Manager section of the registry. This can happen if you've restored a 9.x backup created on a different computer, or as a different user.

To fix this, uninstall Fund Manager, and then re-install it. Do not do a restore using a 9.x created backup file. You can do a restore using a 10.x created backup file.
Thanks,
Mark

Hello again Mark,

Yes, you were right.

I installed v10 on the old laptop and made a backup then restored on the new machine. It works perfectly now.

Thanks a ton. I was waiting for the new laptop to make sure it works fine before purchasing and I got a real scare for a while there!!

I shall be purchasing tomorrow. Again, congratulations on producing a fine software.

Best,
