Error 13942 and 376

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hi Mark,

Out of the blue I got a bunch of errors this morning. Everything was fine yesterday, and there were no changes to my computer between then and now. I have FM 10.1 Personal.

When I opened FM, no investments opened. (usually I get prompted for the password on my first investment, then all the rest of the investments open automatically). So I did File/Open on the portfolio. At that point I got a mysterious Error 13942 (no message, just the error number - annoying). That error repeated many times, maybe once per investment?? Then a message that Portfolio Autosave Failed. Then Portfolio File Format Error 376 - that one appeared many times, maybe once per investment? It asked if I wanted to save before exit, I said No.

Then I tried re-opening FM again, and everything seemed fine. All the investments were open, and I could add prices and transactions, etc.

So I guess my questions are - what happened? and do I have anything to worry about?

Thanks
Bill

Hi Bill,

I'm not sure what happened. If you do get the 13942 error you should also get a message with it about FM attempting to fix the problem by adding an investment to a portfolio. The fact that you even got the 13942 error indicates something was wrong. Maybe the portfolio file was corrupt somehow, although this seems odd, as it worked the next time you tried. It sounds like you aren't able to reproduce the problem at this point, so it is difficult to debug. I would suggest making sure you are keeping backups, and if for some reason it happens again, you'll at least always have a backup to go to. You can manually make a backup with "File / Backup..." and you can turn on the feature to automatically backup whenever you exit under "Options / General Preferences... / Data". If it does happen again please let me know. If you can reproduce the problem, then we should be able to figure out why it is happening.
Thanks,
Mark
