Captools Import

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby Shields » Mon Oct 26, 2009 10:19 am

I have Captools data dating back to 1990 but give up trying to use virtual pc to contiue using XP with vista.
The first one of 5 portfolios imported ok but when I try to import another they seem to merge. That is the active stocks in the first appear in the second which is incorrect.
What I want I think is 5 top level portfolios but it seems you can only have one

Hi Shields,

It sounds like you imported your two portfolios into the same sub-portfolio. I would suggest having 1 portfolio file (*.mm4), with 5 sub-portfolios. Something like this:

Code: Select all
Master Portfolio
  - Acct 1
  - Acct 2
  - Acct 3
  - Acct 4
  - Acct 5

Set up these 5 sub-portfolios using the Portfolio Editor window before you do your imports. You can open the Portfolio Editor with "View / Portfolio Editor" if it isn't already open. Right mouse click on "Master Portfolio" and choose "New Sub-Portfolio". Repeat for each account.

After you set up your sub-portfolios, do the 5 account imports. In the import dialog, select the appropriate sub-portfolio under "Import Destination".

BTW, it sounds like you've seen this already, but if not, the instructions for importing from Captools can be found here:

Thanks,

Thanks for prompt reply. I understand your input
Must each "top level portfolio" have at least one sub?
When I try to import the pull down for where to place file always has just one portfolio. It seems it should allow a choice if two or more top level porfolios are set up

Hi Shields,

Let me clarify some FM terms, so we are talking about the same things... There is a portfolio file. This is a file saved with the extension of .mm4, and it contains your whole workspace. It saves which sub-portfolios you have, and what investments belong in each sub-portfolio. It also saves all your preferences, what windows you have open, etc.

There is always at least 1 sub-portfolio open. You can have more, but you have to have 1. The default name for this top level sub-portfolio is called "Master Portfolio". You can have as many sub-portfolios as you want, with as much hierarchy as you want.

Generally, you will only want to have 1 portfolio file (*.mm4), and as many sub-portfolios as you want, to track all your accounts/holdings.

When you import, you can select any sub-portfolio as a destination. You cannot select a different portfolio file (*.mm4) as a destination. In your case, if you set up your 5 sub-portfolios before you do the import, then you can choose from them when you do the import.

For some more background, and a tutorial on working with multiple portfolio files and sub-portfolios, you might check out the Portfolio Editor tutorial:
