Set up for two 2 cash accounts (US & Canadian $)?

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby Wayne McCracken 1 » Sat Sep 26, 2009 8:41 am

I live in Canada and invest in US and Canadian stocks. My investment account has separate cash accounts for US and Canadian funds. When a US stock is sold the resulting US funds go into the US cash account. Likewise a Canadian stock settles in Canadian funds. At times I need to move funds between the US and Canadian cash accounts depending on my current needs.

Is there a way to automate this in Fund Manager (I am running FM Professional ver 8.9). If a US stock's purchase funds, and cash proceeds when selling, could use the US funds cash account (and the same for Canadian stocks and Canadian cash) it would be ideal. Otherwise if I could be prompted to decide which of the two cash accounts to use on Buy & Sell transactions, it would meet my needs.

If not I guess I will need to artificially divide the investing account into two Fund Manager accounts and do manual entries for the cash transfers.

Or will sub accounts assist me here. If so I'll dig deeper into sub accounts (a brief review of Help didn't seem to answer my questions).

Thanks,
Wayne

Hi Wayne,

Each sub-portfolio can only have a single default cash account. You could however, set up sub-portfolios something like this:

Code: Select all
Brokerage Acct
  US Holdings
  Canadian Holdings

where each "US Holdings" and "Canadian Holdings" each have their own default cash account. When you wanted to transfer between US and CDN you would need to record both sides of that transaction. For example, a sell out of your CDN cash account, and a buy into your US cash account.[/code]
Thanks,
Mark
