Advice on Backing Up?

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby DavidJ » Wed Sep 23, 2009 2:25 pm

Hi!

We all know that there is hardly any data for which one needs complete, detailed, and accessible data as much as for investing data. I have all of my FM data, including registry entries, automatically backup up both locally and remotely. I also have the installation file for a recent version of FM and my password, serial number, and email address. Those aren't the question. The question is about backing up to another PROGRAM altogether to prepare for the EXTREMELY unlikely event that FM itself should suddenly and mysteriously stop working and become uninstallable on my system.

Until now I have been using the free version of MSN Portfolio Manager as a second program, but for practical purposes it is going to disappear on Nov. 1, 2009. The only reasonable substitute I can find which can really import all of my old transactions costs money, so I should really make a decision:

Is it worthwhile recording all of my investment transactions in two independent programs, or has this gone beyond caution to insanity?

Do you guys use a second program to store your data, in addition to FM?

Thanks.
D.

Hi DavidJ,

Here's one idea... In addition to backing up your Fund Manager data, you could export it to some standard format, like a QIF or CSV file. This way you don't have to actually record/maintain it in a second application, but if worst came to worst, you would have your data in a format that many other applications can read.
Thanks,
Mark

Yes, I guess that I'll export it periodically to a .qif.

Is there any way to do this by command line? That would allow me to easily automate-and-forget.

Thanks.
David.

Hi David,

Sorry, no, that isn't a feature available via command line.
Thanks,
Mark

Any chance that some or all of the export functions will be available from the command line in some future version?

Thanks again.

Hi David,

Yes, that is a possibility. It has to be weighed against all the other potential improvements, but I can see this being a helpful addition.
Thanks,
Mark
