data file folders

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Do people generally store their .dat files all in one Windows folder, or create subfolders matching the heirarchy of their portfolios/sub-portfolios for storing their data, in order to keep all the .dat files for one account in its own subfolder ? Is there any advantage/disadvantage to doing it either way ?

Thanks,

Hi Oscar,

I believe most people do store all of their .dat files in one folder. You can store them in separate folders to match the hierarchy, but this isn't necessary, is quite a bit more work, and doesn't provide much benefit. Some may say that things are a little more organized if you go to the trouble of storing all the .dat files in their own folders, but there are drawbacks. First, it is more work. Second, if you ever decide to change your hierarchy in Fund Manager, the folder hierarchy would no longer match, or also need to be changed, separately.
Thanks,
Mark
