restore data/ access is denied/

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby alciati » Fri Jan 04, 2019 2:29 am

HI Marc
I installed FM on a new computer and I can not restore my backups.

For the older backup when I restore I get message Access is denied and then Portable/Cloud Preferences Restore failed.

I chose Restore everything in backup and specified a new folder and asked to open the restored portfolio.

For the newest backup I can restore but then I dod not get the preferences and all the personal labels are lost

what can I do?

I have saved the whole folder with all data in a Onedrive Personal account on the cloud.

Thanks

I saw that I lost for some reason the original location of fmprefs.txt

it seems in .\fmprefs.txt while it should take the same folder where the other files are saved

do not know what happened but this may explain the problem.

What can I do?

Hi alciati,

It is normal to say the original location is .\fmprefs.txt. The "." just means the same directory as the FM executable.

What location did you install FM into? If you installed it to the default under C:\Program Files (x86), you will get this error. When FM tries to restore from the fmprefs.txt file, it is first copying it to the directory where you are running FM. The running FM program cannot write files into the C:\Program Files (x86) directory, as you must be running as an admin in order to write into this folder.

In order to restore the preferences from a backup with fmprefs.txt you must be running FM from a folder where you have write permission. So, try this:

1) Install FM to this new folder you've created in a location where non-admin programs have write access (not under C:\Program Files (x86)).
2) Start FM from this location by double clicking on the FM.exe.
3) If you want to keep portable/cloud mode on, then turn it on _before_ doing your restore. Set this under "Options / General Preferences... / Data / Portable/Cloud Mode".
4) Restore from the backup as you were before.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi alciati,

Please try opening up Internet Explorer, and browsing to Yahoo Finance. Doing so, may clear up whatever issue is happening. It needs to be Internet Explorer, and not any other web browser. Internet Explorer uses the same Windows component as Fund Manager (WININET) to access the internet. After you've successfully loaded Yahoo Finance in IE, try retrieving again with Fund Manager, and see if that hasn't fixed it.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Andrea,

If you restored everything in the backup, all your colors/preferences/everything should be restored exactly like they were before. Are you sure you're restoring the correct *.FMB file? Did you restore everything in the backup?
Thanks,
Mark
