New Computer and Auto backup?

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby heidiasst » Tue Jul 03, 2018 8:11 am

HI Mark,

So, as you know yesterday we installed a new computer and transferred
our Fund Manager software.

Now that we have the new computer, when I close FM, it no longer performs
an auto backup and it also says that I don't have a backup file?

Can you walk me through what I need to do on this?

Thanks as always, Heidi

Hi Heidi,

Check your backup settings under "Options / General Preferences... / Data". You might need to "Browse..." and select the correct location for your backups. It may be left pointing to a directory that no longer exists, causing the backups to fail. The default location for backups is your "My Documents \ Fund Manager \ autoback" folder.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi,

Just to add to this thread. Followed the website instructions to transfer to a new computer and it was seamless except for having to manually reset the location of the autobackup folder (I prefer a different location than the default).

Is there a way to carry over this preference as well when we restore from a backup file?

Thanks,

Hi Shashank,

When restoring with the new computer instructions you restore everything in the backup. This will include your "Global Preferences (registry values)", which stores your preferred automatic backup directory. When restoring Fund Manager does a check to make sure that this backup directory exists, and only restores this value if it is an existing folder. If it isn't, the current preference will not be changed, and the default preference is your "My Documents \ Fund Manager \ autoback" folder.

So, your autoback preference should be restored, but only if that folder exists at the time of restoring.
Thanks,
Mark
