Moving Investments between subportfolios

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hi Mark,

I want see/report on (a) Holdings, (b) Open Orders and (c) both combined "as if" all open orders were filled, so I have created the hierarchy below.
:Combined Reporting
- Actual Holdings
--- Account 1
--- Account 2
- Open Orders

First, for entering the investments in "Orders", my understanding is that I'm just going to enter in as iff the positions were bought/covered, sold/shorted, unless you can point me onto a better path.
Q1. Yes?

Second, investments will be eventually deleted or moved, so if a position does not get filled I would want to move it out of "Orders" to a lower unused "archive" sub-portfolio...if a position does indeed get filled, I would want to move it out of "Orders" to the appropriate "Account" portfolio. FM has been automatically adding the account number to the symbol for the file names.
Q2. Do I drag and drop? Do I select the Account and then File>Open the file of the open order and then save it with a new name reflective of the account?

I see myself posting open orders with care and the full expectation that they be filled. It is because I want to sell/short some holdings and buy/cover others that I really think having the reporting done as outlines would work well. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

I believe the most common usage is not to have a separate "Open Orders" sub-portfolio, but to just record the transactions that get executed into your regular account sub-portfolio. You can do it this way though if you prefer.

When it comes time to move trades from "Open Orders" to your actual account, you might want to just open up the transaction in the data register, and use copy/paste to paste the transaction into an existing investment in your account. If this is a new investment to your account you can just drag/drop the investment from your Open Orders into the account.
Thanks,
Mark

Okay, I see your point. After mucking about with the idea of the Open Orders sub-portfolio, rather than moving them I like the idea of just deleting the entries there and manually entering the filled trades in the respective accounts as I noticed that the file name does not change when I drag and drop and sometimes my open order is really over a few accounts anyway.

THAT said, and this might be helpful for the group, the solution I'm going with is:

1. use the Alert Trigger+Distance functionality to monitor my stops (thus when the distance goes negative, something most likely would have been sold)

2. Sub-Total my Report by Asset Type AND for 'open orders' I just code them as CASH (I have asset type labels for cash, bonds, gold, stock industry groups, etc)

The above way has me put the actual "new" purchases/shorts" in the respective account and I can see my 'open orders' very easily...all I have to do is the 1 Investment Properties>Asset Type edit and the Buy/Sell Transaction date/price fill details.

Also, not only records the 'open orders' but also keeps the cash clean, file names good, and eliminates my need to 'split' the open order into multiple accounts or simply delete it and manually enter the purchases when they are filled.

Perhaps I was redundant, but hey.
