Removing 'wrong' .dat files from a portfolio

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Mark,

I have two questions about getting rid of erroneous entries in a
portfolio.

My most recent transaction download did not contain a new purchase
even though the cash account activity was in the download. However,
I did find the security's .dat file. When I tried to "Open" it, it said that
the file was already open in the portfolio. However, I could not see it
in the portfolio editor and, therefore, cannot change any attributes.
There is only one .dat file for this security.

Upon "unhiding" the holdings using the 'View' menu, I see 3 entries
for this security. After changing the attribute in one entry to remove
the hidden status and then turning back the "hiding" using the the 'View'
menu, I find that all three of the entries are there in the portfolio
editor. What more, the portfolio report contains 3 entries!!

The question is how do I remove the 2 "extra" entries in the portfolio.
Somehow, FM seems to create 3 positions based on just one .dat
file. The portfolio editor shows the same path for all three entries.

The second question is related. While trying to see what the "Open
Investment" menu item would do, I chose an investment that happens
to be in another portfolio. Bang -- it appeared in the portfolio that I
am trying to fix. Now, I have another unwanted position in the
portfolio!!

Same question -- how do I undo the "Open Investment" operation
for the portfolio in question or, just remove it.

thanks

Mark,

I forgot to add that I have come across the "Close" menu item when
I right click on a security in the Portfolio Editor. However, I am vary
about doing anything as I am afraid that I will cause more damage!

thanks

Hi sj,

You are on the right track, you want to 'close' these extra investments. You are allowed to instantiate the same investment file multiple times in any sub-portfolio. You will get a warning however when you do try to open the same investment file twice. This is the warning you saw. To fix this, just select the un-wanted investments in the Portfolio Editor, and choose "Edit / Close", or just hit the "Delete" key on your keyboard. Re-save your portfolio with "File / Save Portfolio" to remember these changes.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

Thanks. I now understand how the "Close" works. I fixed the problem.

Once again, thanks for the quick and precise response.
