Installation Error

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Installation of personal (evaluation) version 11.4 in my regular user account on Windows 7 (64-bit) is failing with the following error message:

"Error opening file for writing. C:\Program Files(x86)\fund Manager\Fm.exe. Click Abort to stop the installation, Retry to try again, or Ignore to skip file."

"Running as Administrator" works fine, but then the installation appears only in the admin account (start->programs).

I don't really want to log into the admin account to run FM. Any idea why cannot I install and run it from a regular account?

Hi jjk,

Under Windows 7 a user must have admin permissions in order to write into the Program Files (x86) folder. You can either install it as a standard user to a different folder, or you can install it as an admin user and then have the standard user run it from where the admin installed it. The setup program only creates shortcuts for the user who installs the program, but the standard user can create their own shortcut to the Fm.exe where you installed it as an admin. The program will run fine as a standard user, but you must be an admin to install it or update it if located in the Program Files folder.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

OK, that does it. Thanks. Everything seem to work fine now from my regular user account after creating a shortcut on the regular user desktop and moving the data folder from the admin user to the regular user. Yes, I did Open Portfolio from the new location.

I am continuing to evaluate FM. I have several Excel sheets with VBA that I will continue to use for analysis. The portfolios in FM will be based up on the spreadsheets, which also use end-of-day historical quotes. Now that FM also has historical quotes and it is easier to update and maintain them there, is there anyway I can access/parse the price data from FM investment files to ensure that I am using the same price data for both?

Hi jjk,

Glad you got it working. Yes, you can "export" all your pricing data from Fund Manager to a standard CSV file. See "File / Export / Prices / Comma Separated...". You could then utilize that data wherever else you wanted.
Thanks,
Mark
