Strange Error Message

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hi!

I'm running FM Personal 10.9.

About 2 days ago, I updated my WinXP Pro Machine from SP2 to SP3. I also tried updating to a new versio of Avira Antivir, although I'm not sure I'll stay with it.

About the same time, I started getting an error message which starts with "Could not create internet output log file C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data\Fund Manager\intlog.txt...." It seems to me that FM is also refusing to use Internet prices to update the report until I dismiss the error message, but I'm not sure.

I suppose that I could make that directory writable by all users, but I can't understand why an application should suddenly start trying to write to "Default User" in the first place.

How do I fix this?

Thanks.
D.

Hi DavidJ,

Fund Manager needs to write some log files, and it does this in your user's "Application Data" folder, inside another folder called "Fund Manager". Fund Manager queries Windows for your user's Application Data folder location. I'm not sure why yours is going to "Default User", maybe you are somehow logged in as that user? Maybe you just need to delete the current log files in the "Application Data \ Fund Manager" folder? I would try this first, and see if that doesn't correct the problem. Not being able to write to these log files will prevent you from being able to retrieve prices.
Thanks,
Mark

I deleted the files intlog.txt and intlog2.txt from all users. FM ha stopped giving the error message, and is now willing to download prices. In other words, it's working.

On the other hand, it is STILL writing to

C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data\Fund Manager\intlog.txt and
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data\Fund Manager\intlog2.txt , which seems odd.

I'm not logged in as that user. (I don't know if it's even possible to log in as "Default User", which I assume is reserved for Windows' use.)

If it starts making problems again, I'll post again.

Thanks.
David.

Hi David,

Glad it is working again. I don't know why it is writing to this location either. Fund Manager is requesting from Windows the current user's Application Data folder location. For some reason, this is what is being returned.
Thanks,
Mark
