Backup

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Hi Mark,

I'm using FM 11.4 Advisor. I purchased a new computer and followed the posted instructions on how to transfer FM. After making the backup, when I did the restore, I noticed that FM was reporting having 316 .dat files to transfer in. When I opened FM, it went looking for a bunch of missing investments. After a wee bit of looking around, I discovered I had 485 investment files in my old FM directory.

I did a manual transfer of all the .dat files and that seems to have solved the problem, but I thought you should know that FM doesn't appear to backing up all the .dat files correctly.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,

The backup feature backs up all open investments in the portfolio you have open when you do the backup. This does not necessarily mean all the *.dat files in your Fund Manager data folder. It may be you have some closed investments that you aren't using, or are from a different portfolio file.

One fairly common problem with backup/restore across different computers is that if you don't have the same data path on the new/old computers, you can't restore to the original location. Instead you have to restore to an alternate folder.
Thanks,
Mark
