Slow performance on Windows 7

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby Terry Fraser » Mon May 17, 2010 2:16 pm

:( We recently acquired a new computer and Windows 7. We transferred the portfolio from an older computer and Windows XP. The new system performs much slower than the old one. Adding a transaction can take up to one minute versus a second or two on the old system. Since the new system has more raw horsepower and faster I/O, I am at a loss to explain this. I considered backing up the Windows 7 portfolio and moving it back to the XP to see if some data updates are affecting performance. I am not sure I can convert backward from Windows 7 to XP. Any suggestions? Can several years worth of historical prices affect performance? It seems to be related to one of the sub-portfolios.

Hi Terry,

I would not recommend changing your OS for this (do not downgrade from Windows 7 to XP).

When you enter a transaction, what do you see happening on the screen?

If you'd like, you can make a backup, and email it to me, and I'll see if I can't spot a problem. It definitely should not take long to enter a transaction, it is normally instantaneous. You could also try closing any graphs or reports. Maybe you have some very hard to calculate graph or report open that is having to be re-calculated when you enter the transaction. Try using "Window / Close all Graphs" and "Window / Close all Reports", and then see if recording a transaction is still slow?
Thanks,
Mark
