Copy from XP to Windows 7 but lost memorized reports

General questions about using Fund Manager that do not fit into any other forum.

Postby BobC » Wed Apr 07, 2010 6:27 pm

I'm using Fund Manager 9.6 on Windows XP SP3 (on VMware Fusion if that's relevant) and want to copy my portfolio to a new PC running Windows 7. I initially tried to restore a backup; this worked at first but after exiting FM and reopening, the license key was no longer recognized.

Following your instructions to another user on a similar post I re-installed FM and un-selected the final option to launch Fund Manager immediately. This method solved the license key issue but lost access to all of my memorized reports in the process.

When viewed on my old XP PC, the backup file contains the Global Preferences (registry values) files. However, after copying the backup file to the Windows 7 PC and attempting a restore, the global preferences are no longer included on the 'Files in Backup' list. Do I need to transfer the memorized reports preferences using regedit or is there another solution? Thanks.

Hi BobC,

The 10.x versions are the only versions compatible/supported on Windows 7.

I'd suggest installing 10.x on your old PC, create your backup using 10.x, and then move that to your new PC. Install 10.x on your new system, and do a "File / Restore..." using the 10.x created backup from your old PC.

The 9.x and earlier versions had issues doing a backup on one computer, and doing a restore on a new Vista or Windows 7 computer. This has been fixed with 10.x backups and restores.

Please keep in mind that once you save your data in 10.x you can't go backwards in version numbers.

The other option is to manually copy over all your files, and use regedit to transfer your registry preferences, with things like your memorized reports.

The other problem people sometimes run into is that your data files cannot be anywhere underneath C:\Program Files (x86) under Vista or Windows 7. The program itself is installed there, but the data files should not be in here. Instead, make sure they are somewhere like "Documents \ Fund Manager". Compatible programs do not have write permission to files in the Program Files folder, so your data needs to be somewhere else, like the Documents folder.
Thanks,
Mark
